SATURDAY, January 17th, 2009

Psalm 14

1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.
2 The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.
3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
4 Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the LORD.
5 There were they in great fear: for God is in the generation of the righteous.
6 Ye have shamed the counsel of the poor, because the LORD is his refuge.
7 Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! when the LORD bringeth back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.

Verse one is the verse i always use for witnessing to an athiest. One time i said that to one and i shut him up! I felt proud of myself, but right afterwords isay to myself, I probably shouldn't of said that with an attitude of, "be afraid". Verse 3 reminds me of Romans 3:10, "There is none righteous, no, not one:" Actually paul got this phrase from this chapter because it says right before that, "As it is written" That was a weird cowincedence.

hey hey!
okeydokey, so verse 1 i like a lot how it says that most people who dont really "believe" in god say there is no god. then it says how God looked down from heaven to see if there was anyone who really did believe in God. then he says that not one of the people that are doing good. i dont know this passage was kinda complicated so i couldn't really get much out of it! sorry

okay so what stuck out to me the most was verse one! Its sounds to me like if someone says to themselves there is no God, then they are a fool. it goes on to say that none of them have done good. I think its also saying how no one is perfect or righteous. Jesus is coming back and we will rejoice! I think thats kind of what this passage was saying! not quite sure but anyways see yall tomorrow!!! bye!

Sweet. Verse one reminds me how I don't really have enough faith to be an atheist hah! It would take a madman to believe that this world was not created by God. All of nature testifies to God's grace. It is important to note, however, that atheists believe the bible is inspired by a nonexistent god and therefor has little relevance. They don't believe the bible! Any attempt to quote scripture to them especially a verse such as this only leads them to believe that Christians are narrow minded and may push them further from a soft heart and accepting God. Argumentative approaches work well but more socratic. I'm reading a book called questioning Evangelism now that talks about an apologetic stance towards evangelism. So for instance when an Atheist might say "there is little merit in the words of the bible and It is contradictory." One could respond "well have you considered the possibility that there is evidence that supports, for instance the fact the Jesus rose from the dead?"
"How would that prove the existence of God?"
"It would certainly make a lot of what Jesus said legitimate, and he had quite a bit to say about God's existence."
This might potentially open up an atheists mind as opposed to citing the scripture straight to them I think they should be able to get into the bible and then realize that only a fool says there is no God as David does. Otherwise we potentially push them away. Anyway, on to the rest, this passage reminds me of todays society! David talks about God looking down and seeing very few who work for him and not a single person who is perfect(to be expected). Then he gives us hope. Our generation can be saved but we must call to the Lord and pray for the leaders of this country no matter how we might disagree with their policy. "oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion!

well verse 4 confuses me a little,
but i guess that the most obvious (verse 1) is easier to talk about, so i will.

I find it kind of funny that some people think thats such a great verse to use for witnessing; i disagree.
From our point of view, we see it as a

"...and you dont want to be a fool, now do you??"


but from someone who is hearing this, possibly for the first time, its kind of a slap in the face right off the bat, that i think only God can really use correctly.
We werent born believers, it was a choice, and the faith and trust to NOT doubt God develops when you give Him the place to work in your life.

Anyways, my point is, i look at it as something that we shouldnt just flat out say when we are witnessing, but look at it for ourselves and say "hey, i was a fool once, instead lets look for something beyond that" so the person understands that salvation has a lot to do with the gift of grace and not only just a big guilt trip focused on the foolishess of a nonbeliever. because, really, we dont want to turn a person off to salvation.
