Genesis 47

1 Then Joseph went and told Pharaoh, and said, “My father and my brothers, their flocks and their herds and all that they possess, have come from the land of Canaan; and indeed they are in the land of Goshen.”
2 And he took five men from among his brothers and presented them to Pharaoh.
3 Then Pharaoh said to his brothers, “What is your occupation?”And they said to Pharaoh, “Your servants are shepherds, both we and also our fathers.”
4 And they said to Pharaoh, “We have come to dwell in the land, because your servants have no pasture for their flocks, for the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. Now therefore, please let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen.”
5 Then Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, saying, “Your father and your brothers have come to you.
6 The land of Egypt is before you. Have your father and brothers dwell in the best of the land; let them dwell in the land of Goshen. And if you know any competent men among them, then make them chief herdsmen over my livestock.”
7 Then Joseph brought in his father Jacob and set him before Pharaoh; and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.
8 Pharaoh said to Jacob, “How old are you?”
9 And Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The days of the years of my pilgrimage are one hundred and thirty years; few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.”
10 So Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from before Pharaoh.
11 And Joseph situated his father and his brothers, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.
12 Then Joseph provided his father, his brothers, and all his father’s household with bread, according to the number in their families.

Joseph Deals with the Famine
13 Now there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very severe, so that the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished because of the famine.
14 And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, for the grain which they bought; and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s house.
15 So when the money failed in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, “Give us bread, for why should we die in your presence? For the money has failed.”
16 Then Joseph said, “Give your livestock, and I will give you bread for your livestock, if the money is gone.”
17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for the horses, the flocks, the cattle of the herds, and for the donkeys. Thus he fed them with bread in exchange for all their livestock that year.
18 When that year had ended, they came to him the next year and said to him, “We will not hide from my lord that our money is gone; my lord also has our herds of livestock. There is nothing left in the sight of my lord but our bodies and our lands.
19 Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants of Pharaoh; give us seed, that we may live and not die, that the land may not be desolate.”
20 Then Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for every man of the Egyptians sold his field, because the famine was severe upon them. So the land became Pharaoh’s.
21 And as for the people, he moved them into the cities, from one end of the borders of Egypt to the other end.
22 Only the land of the priests he did not buy; for the priests had rations allotted to them by Pharaoh, and they ate their rations which Pharaoh gave them; therefore they did not sell their lands.
23 Then Joseph said to the people, “Indeed I have bought you and your land this day for Pharaoh. Look, here is seed for you, and you shall sow the land.
24 And it shall come to pass in the harvest that you shall give one-fifth to Pharaoh. Four-fifths shall be your own, as seed for the field and for your food, for those of your households and as food for your little ones.”
25 So they said, “You have saved our lives; let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.”
26 And Joseph made it a law over the land of Egypt to this day, that Pharaoh should have one-fifth, except for the land of the priests only, which did not become Pharaoh’s.

Joseph’s Vow to Jacob
27 So Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen; and they had possessions there and grew and multiplied exceedingly.
28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years. So the length of Jacob’s life was one hundred and forty-seven years.
29 When the time drew near that Israel must die, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “Now if I have found favor in your sight, please put your hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me. Please do not bury me in Egypt,
30 but let me lie with my fathers; you shall carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their burial place.” And he said, “I will do as you have said.”
31 Then he said, “Swear to me.” And he swore to him. So Israel bowed himself on the head of the bed.

This is a really neat story. We see that all of Josephs family is blessed because of his righteousness. EVERYONE! Josephs father, brothers, his brothers families, his family... Everyone that was related to Joseph was being blessed because He was being faithful! Think about the difference you can make in your family! If you will just be Godly.

It is easy to read this and think: Well, that is an old testament story but that doesnt happen today. Well it does: It is amazing to see the way that God has changed the path of my life... As I look around and see where some of my relatives are (Jail, addictions, horrible lives) I am reminded of how God has blessed my life because of the righteousness of the Godly family members that I have. Now, they are not all perfect... But a few of them have really seeked after God with all of their heart! I am thankful for Godly family members that I am able to reap the blessings of the decisions they have made.

Also: I love the business wisdom that Joseph shows in this story. Joseph uses the blessing of God to bring the most benefit possible! Joseph is able to get all the money in Egypt, all of the livestock in Egypt and all of the land in Egypt for the Pharaoah. God blessed even the Pharoah on behalf of Joseph!!

Joseph was such an incredible example of faithfulness and constant blessings!!!

Joseph's entire family is now being blessed by the grace of God, however we must understand that it isn't because God simply like Joseph, it is because he remained faithful through the good and the bad. I know the my family is slowly coming to Christ and giving up their old ways but is certainly is not due to a lack of faith of the part of my Godly family members. It can be so hard to put our faith in a God that we do not see working in such tangible ways in this day and age. Yet, if we look at all the small blessings we receive we learn that God is working in our lives, if we let him that is. I know that I am going to pray that I will have faith like Joseph and that my family will be blessed as his was because they came to the Lord.

:] I am finally meeting some Christians up here. I am trying to stay away from the bad crowd up here. It's really tempting to make friends with the wrong people for the wrong reason. I don't want to let that happen to me again, it did in high school and it was not good.

It was cool to see Joseph being faithful to God in his most troubleing times, and now because of his faithfulness, people are getting food in the famine without it being much of a hassle. Even Joseph's brothers, who had betrayed him, now are blessed by Joseph loving God and having a forgiving heart. Wow! The many things God has planned for you if you serve Him all of your days!

I love this story in the Bible, how Joseph was a great example of God's blessings on our family and friends etc. If we are just godly and BE FAITHFUL we can have God's blessings just as Joseph and his family received from God.

well i think its cool that Joseph influences his family in the right path. How cool would that be if God was so pleased with me that my family could even see it. Not only did his family and friends see it but they were being blessed from Gods grace.

All this because Joseph was staying faithful to God!

Wow in this passage Joseph is staying so faithful to God its unbelievable. Wow I can't believe Joseph was still nice to his brothers. When his brothers came i can't imagine him giving them food and a house.
That just shows how nice Joesph was.

Wow, Joseph was ultimately faithful.
He was so faithful that even those around him were blessed due to HIS faithfullness!
Thats something difficult to do, but as we see, Joseph made it his lifestyle to follow and please God.
Its like a ripple in water when something falls into it, except in Josephs situation it wasnt like a leaf, or an acorn, the whole tree fell in his pond!
The affects of his devotion for God were obvious among his family, pharaoh, and all of Egypt!
I cant even be compared to Joseph in his faithfullness and willing attitude, but thats definitely something i think that everyone can work harder to mirror.
See yall tomorrow!

wow, we see how God blessed joseph, joseph's family, and even pharoh by joseph's good decisions and following God. we should at least try, if not do, good decisions that would honor God and do things that would give glory to God, just like joseph did. joseph did the things that he did to honor God and give all the glory to God; he never did those things to get glory for himself or get himslef noticed. by joseph obeying God, God blessed everyone jospeh new, wow thats a lot of people. just like i keep saying every time, we need to be more like joseph, even though it is almost impossible because jospeh is pretty much a perfect christian, but we need to try to be more like joseph.

I've heard a while back that if you are faithful to God then your family and your child's family and their child's family will be blessed, but if your not faithful then your family and your child's family and their child's family will reap the consequences of your actions which means that I'm being blessed right now because of how my grandmother lived and how my mom lives. I think God allows for this to happen because He sees that whoever is faithful will love and obey Him during the good times and during the bad times and they will do their best to bring up a God;y child and keep God first in the household.

I haven't been doing my devotions because my English class is crazy hard and he gives us enough work to last two days. I've already used have my supply of looseleaf paper for this first project and I bought a 100 pack. Maybe I should have taken regular English 2.

Wow ok so Josephs whole entire family is being blessed because of Joseph! that is cool! This passage shows how when you remain faithful all the time through good and bad then you will be rewarded! This passage is very helpful to those who are not very sure if you will be rewarded!(as we can see you will!) Joseph is not perfect but he is a great example for us and we should try and act more like he did! Joseph as we know trusted and obeyed God and remained faithful and ended up even being able to get the Pharoah all the money, livestock, and land of Egypt! That is so cool! So what we should do: remain faithful especially with your devotions, and trust and obey God! Also follow what God wants you to do and not what you want to do because that does not work out well!!!

Sorry I have missed a few days Pastor Lee, now that we are farther into the school year teachers are starting to give us alot more homework than I usually would have. I WILL TRY MY HARDEST TO GET ON HERE EVERYDAY AND DO MY DEVOTIONS!!! bye for now!

Joseph seemed to just have blessings poured unto his family. The cool thing is that it is all because of what he did! If we do Godly things the blessings not only will effect us but have a ripple effect on the ones around us. I hope that I can bless my family and friends through my actions.

In these passages I saw that Joseph had great integrity. He had plenty of power to do whatever he wanted but instead he handled the situation responsibly and fairly. At first it may not have seemed this way but down the road people were thanking Joesph for what he did. Now let me say this that it is one thing to see integrity in the life of others, but it is another thing to have it for ourselves. If we are going to be people of integrity we must understand what it is.
This kind of person is a person who will make an impact. They will still be standing when others fall. They will be remembered when others are forgotte. When these people share this with others, for the gospel . . . others will listen . . . and believe.
