PRAISE GOD IT IS FRIDAY!
Sometimes I wonder if anyone reads anything that I write up here. Especially when I say something like "write a personal application", or "make up some youth group names" and nothing ever happens...(?) I am not sure if you read it or not, so here is what we will do to test it out. At the very beginning of your Devos, THE FIRST WORD OF THE FIRST LINE, type your favorite candy bar. Then the people who dont read the top will have no clue WHAT we are talking about. Lets Try It.
A Few Thoughts From Yesterday:
Jessica: Did I read that Wrong, or did you actually say: "not much to say"... WOW! :)
Rachel: It is so nice to have a network of friends that you can call on to pray for your friends: Everyone take a minute to say a prayer for Erica and Elizabeth.
Mr. Carl: Right On! Thanks for joining us! It is encouraging for us to see an adult get on here and read what we have to say. Come on here any time... or all the time :)
Everyone Else: When you are on here and you go a day or two without seeing someone specific doing their devotions call them up and encourage them to stay faithful!! That is one of the great benefits of doing them together like this. If you dont call that person, Who will?????
Philippians 3:1-11
1 Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. For me to write the same things to you is not tedious, but for you it is safe.
2 Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the mutilation!
3 For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh,
4 though I also might have confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I more so:
5 circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee;
6 concerning zeal, persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.
7 But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ.
8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ
9 and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith;
10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death,
11 if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.
Butterfinger
This passage may be a little difficutl to understand, in fact, I went and read part of a commentary, so that I could explain it as best as possible to you. Have you ever heard someone say... "I am a religious person"? Well this passage is Paul writing to the church at Philippi telling them, DO NOT BE RELIGIOUS! But BE N A RELATIONSHIP with Christ. Paul even goes as far as saying, Beware of Dogs (refering to these packs of "religious zealots" that go around "barking" at everyone) Then he says beware of Evil workers, and finally the most interesting of all... Paul says Beware of mutilation... ?? What is he talking about? Well, I must be careful how I describe this, because I dont want to upset any parents, so here is what I will tell you to do. I will refer to this practice as circumcision or "cutting the body" and you can ask your parents if you are not sure what I am talking about.
When a baby boy was born in the old testament, If he was Jewish then he had to be circumcised, to be "saved", to show that he was a "child of God". However when Christ came to earth and died for the sins of man, Circumcision was no longer necessary for salvation.
But their were some people that would not believe it. During this time, their were Religious people that would go around telling people they could only be saved if they were circumcised, so Paul writes this letter as an explanation.
In verse 3 Paul makes it clear that "cutting the body" has nothing to do with getting someone saved. In verse 4 Paul explains that if anyone could be saved by circumcission then HE could! 5 and 6 explain his family "religious roots" He was born jewish, and so on...
and verse 7 is a key verse... Paul says those things that I thought were "good" I realized they meant nothing.
This is where our application comes in... Do we do "the right things" because we just follow the "religious rules" or do we do wat is right because of our relationship with Christ. You see, we have all kinds of "religious" things in our life... going to church, singing during worship, helping pastor Lee... Why do you do these things? To be religious? or to be closer to Christ.
Paul makes it clear that we should not live "religious" lives, trying to please men, by doing things withor to the flesh, HOWEVER, we must obey God, because our heart longs to KNOW HIM, AND THE POWER OF HIS RESURRECTION, AND THE FELLOWSHIP OF HIS SUFFERING.
It is not about Rules, But about the Relationship!
When we are in a good relationship then we will follow the rules with the right heart attitude.

Hershy's Bar-
I read your post every day although I don't comment. You rock Pastor Lee!
Hershey Bar! Whoo
Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the mutilation! Meaning stay away from the people that try to get you down they will try to get you for your religious belifs i have personal experience with that and you just need to iggnore it and keep on living for Jesus!

Our world should revolve around God and the Scriptures. A person could say that he or she is religious but they might just go to church all the time or pray all the time but they have no faith. We need to have the right relationship with Christ and we need to follow the religious rules (the ten commandments) Its defeintly about the relationship not the rules. But the rules are very important to follow.

I think this really is encouraging us to beware of the evil around us, and we must keep in mind that ultimately it is not up to us to withstand the evil we must depend on Christ. Even Paul himself said that he couldn't count on himself to do right on his own!!
I really can apply this passage to my own life. So often you can get so comfortable in your own Christianity that you forget that you need God. I feel sometimes like I can live my life in my own strength, but if I do I will definitely fall short. I must remember that all accomplishments in my own strength are worthless- we must depend on the Lord

I like it. So let's not just "go through the motions" But every time we praise or tithe or pray or commit good deeds we aren't just doing it to be systematic and based on tradition but to grow closer to christ. Again church is not the source of our relationship with christ but it is important so that we walk away everytime stronger in christ and more confident in his teachings.
Snickers all the way baby!!!
AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! I was reading what you wrote this time pastor lee and well CIRCUMCISION, I am so glad I'm alive now instead of back then. so about the passage now well anyone can be "religeous" but a real chritian should be having a relationship with god. we can't just go to church and just sit there, and instead be proving our faith to god so that we can show others how awesome he is.
...Give me a break, give me a break, break me off a piece of that KIT KAT BAR!!!
O and Pastor Lee why don't you explain to us what circumcision is cause I asked my parents and they don't know hahahahahahahaha just kidding
In these passages Paul talks about how the Jews believed that they had to be circumcised to be acceptable in God's eyes. But Paul tells them that that is just not the case. A true Christian knows that it is not about our performance or rituals that we do, but it is about the relationship that we have with Jesus Christ. That is really where our joy comes from.
I looked up the word righteousness and Webster’s dictionary defines it as right standing. In verses 9 and on it talks about righteousness. But we as humans are not right standing and can't be perfect (except me haha)!!
Sin is what separates us from God but we all knew that and we also know that that is why Christ died for us! Now we can really have joy and happiness and eternal life if we have a relationship with Christ. It isn't a religion; it is the absolute truth!!!
I really liked what you said Pastor Lee about, do we do the right thing because we are following the "religious rules" or are we doing the right thing to be more like Christ. That is something I thought about when I read that. Because I can give all the right "Sunday School answers" but am I studying what I know to be closer to God or just to "show off" I guess you could say! I hope I don't fall into that category I want to do it for the right reasons.

BABY RUTH you almost got me pastor lee i was like what is everyone talking about? This passage was very difficult to understand but thanks to Pastor Lee i think i got it. It's telling us not to be fake like when someone lives their life saying oh yeah i'm religous. It's telling us that no matter what anyone tells you is right the only way to heaven is through Christ.
And now because I want the longest devo award I will give you a "breif" description of the baby ruth bar:
Wikipedia says Baby Ruth is a candy bar that is made of chocolate-covered peanuts, though the nougat found in it is more like fudge than is found in many other American candy bars. The bar was a staple of Chicago-based Curtiss Candy Company for some seven decades. After a series of mergers and acquisitions, the candy bar is currently produced by Nestlé. In 1921 the Curtiss Candy Company refashioned its Kandy Kake into the Baby Ruth.Although the name of the candy bar sounds nearly identical to the name of the famous baseball player Babe Ruth, the Curtiss Candy Company has traditionally claimed that it was named after President Grover Cleveland's daughter, Ruth Cleveland. Nonetheless, the bar first appeared in 1920, as Babe Ruth's fame was on the rise and long after Cleveland had left the White House and 16 years after his daughter had died. Moreover, the company had failed to negotiate an endorsement deal with Ruth, and many saw the company's story about the origin of the name of the bar as merely a way to avoid having to pay the baseball player any royalties. Ironically, Curtiss successfully shut down a rival bar that was approved by, and named for, Ruth, on the grounds that the names were too similar in the case of George H. Ruth Candy Co. v. Curtiss Candy Co, 49 F.2d 1033 (1931). [1]
A couple of versions of the story are referenced in the trivia book series Imponderables, by David Feldman:
In the edition called What Are Hyenas Laughing At, Anyway? (1995), p.84, he reports the standard story about the bar being named for Grover Cleveland's daughter, with interesting additional information that ties it to the President: "The trademark was patterned exactly after the engraved lettering of the name used on a medallion struck for the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition in 1893, and picturing the President, his wife, and daughter Baby Ruth."
The next edition, How Do Astronauts Scratch an Itch? (1996), p. 288-289, brings out a new and potentially more plausible (and prosaic) explanation. The author was tipped off by a letter writer, referring to another trivia collection, More Misinformation, by Tom Burnam: "Burnam concluded that the candy bar was named... after the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Williamson, candy makers who developed the original formula and sold it to Curtiss." (Williamson had also sold the "Oh Henry!" formula to Curtiss around that time.) The writeup goes on to note that marketing the product as being named for a company executive's granddaughter would likely have been less successful, hence their "official" story.
However, in "Do Elephants Jump?" (2004), p. 264-265, David Mikkelson of Snopes.com denies the claim that the Williamsons invented the recipe, as Mr. George Williamson was head of the Williamson Candy Company, producers of the Oh Henry! bar. He continues to say that "the Baby Ruth bar came about when Otto Schnering, founder of the Curtiss Candy Company, made some alterations to his company's first candy offering, a confection known as 'Kandy Kake.'"
As if to tweak their own official denial of the name's origin, after Babe Ruth's Called Shot at Wrigley Field in the 1932 World Series, the Chicago-based Curtiss company installed an illuminated advertising sign for Baby Ruth on the roof of one of the flats across Sheffield Avenue, near where Ruth's home run ball had landed in center field. The sign stood for some four decades before finally being removed.
Company founder Otto Schnering chartered a plane in 1923 to drop thousands of Baby Ruth bars over the city of Pittsburgh -- each with its own mini parachute.
In 1995, a company representing the Ruth estate licensed his name and likeness for use in a Baby Ruth marketing campaign. [1]
On p.34 of the spring, 2007, edition of the Chicago Cubs game program, there is a full-page ad showing a partially-unwrapped Baby Ruth in front of the Wrigley ivy, with the caption, "The official candy bar of major league baseball, and proud sponsor of the Chicago Cubs."
Continuing the baseball-oriented theme, during the summer and post-season of the 2007 season, a TV ad for the candy bar showed an entire stadium {played by Dodger Stadium) filled with people munching Baby Ruths, and thus having to "hum" rather than singing along with "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" during the seventh-inning stretch.
I think that should do it. See you at Bigger or better.
Reese's Cups
Paul is saying that we should try to act Christ like not "religious" because acting Christ like is trying to please God but acting "religious" is pleasing man. he is also says that the things he hasn't done for Christ he has counted for loss because everything we do should honor Christ and be for Christ. also he says to be aware of dogs and evil workers because they will just take you away from Christ and not bring you to Him. it also reminds me of what people told me when i was little that the bad people will always bring the good people down and the good people will rarely bring the bad people up, so just have Godly influences and hang around Godly people and not bad people or dogs.
Kit Kat
Thanks Pastor Lee for that explanation. This is one of those passages that can have you scratching your head, wondering what is paul saying.
I would recommend to all bible students to find a bible with good helps. I use a Thomas Nelson with helps as my everyday Bible.
I can relate to Paul in this passage. He is concerned that the pure faith of the Phillipian church would be corrupted by the Judaizers. As teachers and pastors, we are concerned that false teachers and doctrines will cause members of our church to stumble. I have seen this many times over the years. It is always heartbreaking. We must hold the WORD OF GOD to be our ultimate authority.
Hey Jess, I like the name "Generation N.O.W." also.
Way back when(in the old days;9 years ago)) we used the name SWAT -means Serving With Absolute Truth. Our shirts were really cool! I think other groups have and are using this now.
See you guys Saturday!
hmmm i think itll have to be reeses =]
and what i got from this passage is that to through all things away and count them as garbage is telling us to get rid of all the ungodly things on our life so we can focus on God and the things he wants us to do so we can have a better relationship with Him because if we have ungodly things in our lives then that is a barrier that keeps us from God and having the relationship that we are supposed to have with him =]
Ben wow i havent seen you in forever its good to see u on here =]
oh and i will be there tomorrow =]
Um I don't understand why everyone is a candy bar but i guess ill have to be a milky way because I'm brown on the outside and soft on the inside.
After reading pastor lee blog I understood that I doesn't take following rules to become a good christian you should have a good relation with Jesus and then later your heart with follow the right path being that you are a christian. I've asked pastor lee before what happens if you get saved and then you start killing people and doing really bad things r you still going to heaven. He always says that once you get saved you wont want to do those things because you will be stong in Jesus.
snickers Paul is saying to watch out for not just the obvious, but the things you may think are true that could be misleading you. To be sure what we believe is true, we must have that real connection with the Lord and also have the genuine desire to please Him, where we are actually living for God not just as a way to humanly look good, but as a lifestyle that is really focused on the Lord and his instruction.
application wise, we should want more to have a strong and focused relationship with God and be doing the right things for the right reasons; because of that relationship.
REESE
I hear ppl sayin they're religious ALL the time! But they dont have a relationship w/god.
Anybody can b"religious" (being born in2 a religion or doing certian things)
but they don't have a relationship.
religion isn't about "following rules" alone.
It's about BUILDING that relationship.
it's not enough to say "i believe" & never touch that subject again.
like being married & it being long distance & only seeing the person ONCE a week.
Pastor Lee used that ALL the time b4 he married Katie)
