Jonah 3:1-10

1 Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying,
2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I tell you.”
3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three-day journey in extent.
4 And Jonah began to enter the city on the first day’s walk. Then he cried out and said, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”

5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them.
6 Then word came to the king of Nineveh; and he arose from his throne and laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes.
7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and published throughout Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything; do not let them eat, or drink water.
8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God; yes, let every one turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands.
9 Who can tell if God will turn and relent, and turn away from His fierce anger, so that we may not perish?
10 Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it.

This story seems to get better and better. First of all, we see that God is a God of second Chances!!!!!!!!! Jonah totally turned his back on God and went the opposite direction, but the first verse here says: "The word of the Lord came unto Jonah the second time" No matter what you have done, or where you have gone... God will forgive you if you turn and repepnt today!

Not only does God forgive Jonah, but God forgives the entire city of Nineveh. This was a wicked, ungodly, violent city that hated God, but whenever Jonah came into town: Verse 5 tells us that they "believed God". How great is that.

Jonah walked into the city and believed God. How much easier would it have been to obey God in the first place?? Well one book that I read explained that Jonah probably looked very scary because he had been eaten for three days by the stomach acid inside of this whale. The book explains that his skin was prbably bleached, all of his hair was singed off, and he could have even had sores...

I don't know about you, but if some dude came walking up to me looking like that and telling me that God was about to destroy me (too) then I would definitely listen.

I think God can use our past failures for his glory as we see Him do in this passage through Jonah! It is so wonderful how the people of Nineveh instantly got right with God. They instantly proclaimed a fast, and told everyone to change their clothes into sackcloth and ashes... This was a sign of repentance.

The last thought is this: The people of Nineveh did not even know if God would have mercy on them... Jonah never said if you get right He will forgive you... Jonah simply told them that God is going to destroy them... They decided that they would find out if this God is a mercyful God and HE TRULY IS!!!! He showed mercy on Jonah, on Nineveh, and He will show mercy on you, if you turn to him in repentance!! God is Good! Love For Him!!!!!

What you said, Pastor Lee, about God's forgiveness, is also said in Matthew 18:21-22. Peter askes Jesus, "how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me?" And Jesus said "seventy times seven." Which means He will forgive you every time you sin against Him. All God wants from us is repentance, including the lost.

So Jesuswent up tp Jonah a 2nd time and told him to go to Nineveh to witness. and Jonah gets there and he yells Nineveh is gonna be destroyed. So instintly believed in God. then
they had a fast and put sacks on there heads. and he went to tell the king and he did the same and God saw they were Good and turned there evil ways.
cool passage!

so we are doing the thingy tomorrow nite? And i like the pizza or cheeseburger idea.

so god gives jonah another chance and jonah goes to ninevah and confronts the people and tells them that god is going to destroy them if they dont repent. The people actually do repent and god does not destroy them because of that.

This reminds me that we can always repent and god will always forgive. also that we can show god that we are worthy of a second chance and he may forgive us without the extreme consequences we deserve.

ughh,
i slept in today because i dont feel good ): but ill come back early tomorrow.

Im RSVP-ing for friday, & i would say "B.===

So, i like what you said about God forgiving and being a God of second chances.
It gives more of a reason to live for Him.
He gave His life, which we didnt deserve, and unfailing love, which we dont deserve, and a earthly lifetime of chances when we make mistakes.
Jonah was forgiven for disregarding God, and given another chance.
He used the next chance to show a respectful fear of God and went and told the people of Nineveh that the Lord was not happy with their ways. With that, came another showing of Gods forgiveness; He accepted their fasting and sudden lowliness and had mercy on them.
Thats pretty cool and its reassuring that ill always be forgiven when i turn to God.
(:

i think this passage is really cool because jonah just marches into a town and tells people to stop sinning even though he doesnt know them. i have problem w/ that. i sometimes dont want to tell people to stop doing something that is wrong especially if i dont know them. i need to be more like jonah in that way. will probably come tommorow night. i think we should have pizza. gtg. see ya.

I will definitely be there tomorrow night, and I choose B.

It's true, God uses our failures and turns them around for His glory. And I am so gald that He gives second chances. If He didn't then I wouldn't be where I am today. I would be so far into sin, it's incredible! Thank God He is a God of second chances!

WOW THATS CRAZY!!!! i remember learning bout Nineva, it was a rather brutal & bloodthirsty county & every1 was terrified 2 go near it...

So how cool is that, that they give up their everything that quick cuz Jonah decided 2 follow god!? u c...what u do(actions or consequences of ur actions) affect others!

Jonah helped turn the worst possible & most helpless city 2 Christ by followin his orders=]

If i lived in Ninevah I would kinda be scared of Jonah cause he probably smelled like dead fish guts and other nasty fish junk. But if I were Jonah I wouldnt care what i smelled like because God meant everything to a purpose. Jonah probably took his stinkyness and got the attention of the people and told them about the Word of God. And Jonah would have been soo tired from walking to Ninevah for 3 days!! Wow, God was soo mad about the sins of the people of Ninevah that He was going to destroy the city!(i wonder if we r the same way) But Jonah stood strong for the Lord. Not at first, but God pushed him to go to Ninevah. We need to be the same way with God's Word we need to push ourselves against the world and rest upon His Word.

Pastor Lee I don't know if I can come tomorrow night's movie because of my Open House its @ 6:00pm. My vote for eating is eat before and maybe have snacks there like chips or something like that. Pastor Lee message me on facebook and tell me what time this might end.

When you said,Pastor Lee, about God using our failures for his glory. That applies to me all the time. I really think God does that just to show his awesome powers! God is always answering my prayers whether the answer is a yes or a no. Jesus forgives us and that is what makes a wonderful christian life easy. Pastor Lee, I think I definitely will be able to come tomorrow, and I might bring my friend Emily Stuckey.I vote that we bring $2 for pizza because we all agree that pizza is better than hamburgers.hehehe

this starts out by jonah, after being spit out of the whale, getting a message from God to go the nineveh and tell them that God will destroy them. so after his 3 day journey he finally gets to nineveh and tells the people that God will destroy them. so in hopes that God will have mercy on them they all wear sackcloth, put ashes on them, and fast. so not knowing if God would have mercy on them(which He has mercy on everybody) they still did all this and turned from all their wicked ways and God had mercy on them and didn't destroy them. so by jonah finally listening to God (even after a huge storm hitting his boat, being swallowed by a huge fish, and a 3 day journey) the city of nineveh was saved and got close to God. so if we just listen to God in the first place bad things wont happen to us until we finally do it. so we just need to listen to God the fist time He tells us something and not question Him or turn away from Him.

i will be there tomorrow and we should have cheeseburgers.

This passage is very powerful! Jonah hated the Ninevites, because they did not get along w/ his country. He didn't want to witness to them, but God had other plans. This passage just proves that God is always willing for all to be saved. He will make a way for all to hear the Gospel- even those who are wicked. Another thing that really stuck out to me is that God wants to use us to reach those around us- even those that we think won't possibly be interested in Him. Who would think that a wicked king would hear the Gospel and respond. That is kind of like us seeing someone who looks tough and we think would never get saved, but it is our responsibility to share the Gospel with them. God wants us to be a testimony for Him! We have a faithful God, we must just learn to be faithful to Him.

Pastor Lee,

I will fo sho be there tomorrow night! :)
I choose option A because I perfer not to get fat from the pizza or cheeseburgers! lol

It is so good to know that our God is always ready and willing to forgive us when we come to Him and truly repent. Of course, we should never live in habitual sin or take God's grace and mercy for granted. Sin may be pleasurable for a season, but we also will never get away with our sin and although God will always forgive; there will always be lasting effects and consequences that we will have to deal with; sometimes for the rest of our lives.

Jonah wouldn't dare disobey God a second time. He went to Ninevah and told them that God would destroy them and instead of saying 'well we don't know if God's even gonna save us, theres no point in changing' they turned around completely: they stopped the violence and all their wickedness and repented, the king made the whole city fast and put on sackcloth and ashes to show that they were surrendering to God and changing.

God showed His mercy upon the city of Ninevah and upon Jonah, because he obeyed. We need to obey God's commands! He knew the city would repent and the king would have such a change in leadership, he just needed a messenger. We need to be that messenger, we need to tell our unsaved friends about Christ, we need to encourage our Christian friends when their down and help them grow.

Pastor Lee, I have open house at school at 6:00, so I can't be there at 6, but I can try to be there around 7:30ish. But I don't want you waiting for me and Amy to start anything! We will be happy if we get there in time to play sardines. Im just letting you know that we will be late and to start without us. and if it makes a difference, Im up for $2 pizza.

Pastor Lee,

I am gonna be there tomarrow night and i choose C because im fat already so why not get fater.lol
So i think Jonah has learned his lesson on when God tells him to do something and i dont know if anyone said this already but this was this guy in like the 1850s and he was swallowed by a whale and when he came out his skin was bleached white and he was blind wand he was in there for a little bit and then he passed out and he didnt remember anything except when the crew members were taking him out of the whale but anyway Jonah followed Gods commandment and im sure he was blessed.

yo pastor lee [PN] I will be there friday or 2moro but can I bring like noodles and cook them there so I don't have to pay 2 dollars? Ill bring you one.... but I miss hanging out with you man and your so close to learning a back flip so call me up sum time!!!!!! But I choose option D and it should be we all go to red lobster and Pastor Lee pays for everyone lol.

this passage tells me that God is graceful and no matter what you have done it doesn't matter to him as long as you turn to him and give you life to him! Jonah turned his back on God just like someone did to me today but God didn't care because he gave Jonah a second chance. Thats cool like if somebody turned their back on me it would be very hard for me to give them another chance and trust them again but God doesn't care he will always trust you because he is omniscience. And when you talked about using our past to glorify god I definitely believe that. I went to church in Sarasota to church of hope and speakers came up that were druggies and almost died from drugs but turned their life around because the works of God! Its amazing want God can do.

i think jonah made the right decision when he decided to obey god the second time. it is mind blowing to think of how forgiving god is. he forgave jonah and he forgave the city for being so evil and they quit there evil ways and god let them keep there throughn and wasnt over thrown. wow im so glad God is forgiving

Jonah traveled to Nineveh like Jesus told him to. He also witnessed to the people there warning them that the city will destroyed. So the citizens were smart and took heed to the warning, and then they over saw there evil. Did i get that right? think i did.

Hey Pastor lee call on my cell sometime 2morrow preferrably around 2. Thanks

Hey everyone...I am planning on coming tomorrow night and I think we should have pizza because DUH everybody loves pizza! soooo yeah pizza is a definite yes!

in this passage Jonah got a second chance from God! I think it is awesome how many things God has given me including a second chance after I have done something that is sinful and He doesn't want me to do, even though we should obey God the first time anyways! That is the main thing that stuck out to me and the second one is the forgiveness. I love how awesome it is, I am so thankful for everything God has given me! (including forgiveness!)

sorry I got on here so late I lost track of time! see you tonight!

Wow, that just shows how everything should be done...

To trust in GOD, and let yourself be vulnerable, and show your sin, and give it up to him, and stop it, and truly let it go, all your pain, anguish, faults, gifts, anything that means anything to you, if you offer it up, and do as he asks, he listens.

I really wonder what it would be like to be in that city in those times, to just drop _everything_ in life, and turn to God, and completely ask for forgivness, knowing that you did wrong, and you should be punished for it, but not complain about the punishment you may recieve, not worry about what will happen in a few months, but just let it all go and really repent, and trust in God, and allow him to show you mercy without second guessing or judging, others or ourselves.

I wish it was easy to have that kind of strength.

First of all WOW if that was a three day trip that would have at least been 45-60 miles and Jonah got there in one day. Jonah needs to the olympics. Also Wow if america did what ninevah did just imagine all the blessings that we would have.

So the lessons for today

1 athleticness is good just in case you need to run to a city 45-60 miles away in one day.

2 Obey gods word and keep his commandments he gave them to us for a reason. just like how our parents feel like giving us more when we listen to them and do what they say god is the same way.
