Genesis 34 [Wow! I bet you would have never expected to read a story like THIS in the Bible]

1 Now Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.
2 And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her and lay with her, and violated her.
3 His soul was strongly attracted to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young woman and spoke kindly to the young woman.
4 So Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, “Get me this young woman as a wife.”
5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter. Now his sons were with his livestock in the field; so Jacob held his peace until they came.
6 Then Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him.
7 And the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it; and the men were grieved and very angry, because he had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob’s daughter, a thing which ought not to be done.
8 But Hamor spoke with them, saying, “The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife.
9 And make marriages with us; give your daughters to us, and take our daughters to yourselves.
10 So you shall dwell with us, and the land shall be before you. Dwell and trade in it, and acquire possessions for yourselves in it.”
11 Then Shechem said to her father and her brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me I will give.
12 Ask me ever so much dowry and gift, and I will give according to what you say to me; but give me the young woman as a wife.”
13 But the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father, and spoke deceitfully, because he had defiled Dinah their sister.
14 And they said to them, “We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised, for that would be a reproach to us.
15 But on this condition we will consent to you: If you will become as we are, if every male of you is circumcised,
16 then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to us; and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.
17 But if you will not heed us and be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and be gone.”
18 And their words pleased Hamor and Shechem, Hamor’s son.
19 So the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he delighted in Jacob’s daughter. He was more honorable than all the household of his father.
20 And Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their city, and spoke with the men of their city, saying:
21 “These men are at peace with us. Therefore let them dwell in the land and trade in it. For indeed the land is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters to us as wives, and let us give them our daughters.
22 Only on this condition will the men consent to dwell with us, to be one people: if every male among us is circumcised as they are circumcised.
23 Will not their livestock, their property, and every animal of theirs be ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will dwell with us.”
24 And all who went out of the gate of his city heeded Hamor and Shechem his son; every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.

25 Now it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, each took his sword and came boldly upon the city and killed all the males.
26 And they killed Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah from Shechem’s house, and went out.
27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because their sister had been defiled.
28 They took their sheep, their oxen, and their donkeys, what was in the city and what was in the field,
29 and all their wealth. All their little ones and their wives they took captive; and they plundered even all that was in the houses.
30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have troubled me by making me obnoxious among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and since I am few in number, they will gather themselves together against me and kill me. I shall be destroyed, my household and I.”
31 But they said, “Should he treat our sister like a harlot?”

Wow! Where do we begin? Lets start at the very beginning... So we see Dinah, the daughter of Jacob is out walking around and a man named Shechem saw her and took her away, and raped her.
Shechem was wrong in this decision OBVIOUSLY, but he wanted to make things right and go back to her father and her fathers family and ask them to allow Dinah to be his wife... Well what happens?

Jacob and his family agrees that it would be ok, as long as every male is Circumcised. Let me discretely explain why this is important. This is a practice that some people have done to their baby boys whenever they are born, God also used this practice for hHis people to show that they were dedicated to Him... Well, the sons of Jacob knew that this was an EXTREMELY PAINFUL practice... I mean, lets just say, once they were circumcised they were down for a while...

Well, two of Dinahs brothers, Simeon and Levi, decide that this is a perfect opportunity to get back at Shechem and all of his people. They decide to wait three days after the circumcision, and then they both go into the city and kill every male and destroy all of the city, taking the wives and children captive.

CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT?? How dishonest! What a poor testimony of God.

Let me tell you the lessons I learned from this passage...

1. Schechem made ONE WRONG CHOICE and that choice led to the destruction of his entire city!

We too make choices every day, and when we choose to sin, or to live for ourselves, many times we are one poor choice away from destroying our future. I have talked to 3 different people in the last 24 hours who have made one bad choice that has the potential to change/destroy their life. Dont Sin! You WILL NOT WIN!

2. Jacob was willing to forgive these people as he had been forgiven, but his sons, jhowever had other plans in mind. Simeon and Levi did not respect their fathers wishes, they took matters into their own hands and they caused big problems.

Do you see... they were JUST AS GUILTY OF WRONG as the Rapist was... I think many times we as Christians are quick to judge others and justify our own wickedness. We are quick to "hate" the sinner instead of Hating the sin, we are so quick to think highly of ourselves, as we think low about everyone around us... We must understand something that Simeon and Levi did not get: "When we justify our wickedness we are just as sinful as people who do not claim to know Christ."

Dont live like the lost! Live like you are saved by the blood of Christ!!!!

Wow, I mean Woe! Whoever said that the Bible is boring doesn't know what he or she is talking about.

Another thought I had is that though the nastiness and craziness of our world is in overdrive because our our high-tech society, the world has obviously been a nasty and crazy place ever since sin entered the picture in the Garden of Eden.

Did you ever consider that Dinah's curiosity about the way of the world around her is the first misstep in this event. Don't get me wrong, I am not at all saying that Dinah is to blame for the fact that she was violated. Shechem is to blame for that. But her curiosity about worldly ways put her in a precarious situation. There are a lot of dangerous situations out there today. We need to make sure our curiosity about the ways of the world doesn't put us in dangerous situations.

This event is one of many in the Bible that confirms that our hearts--left to themselves--are indeed deceitful and desperately wicked (Jer. 17:9). I am reminded on almost a daily basis that if we allow ourselves to be governed by the "flesh" (our sinful nature) instead of the Spirit of God things are going to get ugly. I believe Galatians 5:16-24 speaks about that (but I've been wrong before...but not this time).

I'm out.

Pastor lee that is incorrect, the new header is of all the people that won the first devotion reward that was able to go to the activity. Remember how tyler couldn't go nor myslef hmmmmm?

Anyways, So pretty much in the beginning Schechem raped Dinah. So now jacob is peeved and when his sons come home from the field they are peeved, but when Schechem and his father come they are willing to forgive. So Schechem wants Dinah for a wife and will do anything to have her even curcumsise his whole land (OUCH). So while they are in pain dinah's TWO brothers come and kill ALL of Schechems men and take all that they have.

1 Rape is a bad thing it makes many people angry.
2 Circumcision hurts A LOT.
3 It is never right to roght a wrong with something wrong like for example KILLING A WHOLE GROUP OF PEOPLE, and for all those of you who don't know thats also called genocide.

wow, and people think nothing in the bible happens anymore, PPHFFTT!!

didn't girls in the bible have a say in anything??? Sarah was constantly being thorn around to kings and she went, now Dinah let herself be taken away by Jacob, and they never say anything!?!?!?
So Jacob takes her away, rapes her. asked his dad if he can have her as a wife (once again no say in anything)

What he did to Dinah was dispicable. What he did to the city, killing all of the young boys, that was unbelievable. And yet back in their day, that was a rare thing(I think) and now, we look at our present day world, and we see it all the time! Why? Because Satan is the god of this world(unfortunatly). BUT their is hope. As long as you stay faithful to God and be not only readers of the Word, but doerers of the Word, you don't have to worry about you commiting those wicked acts.

Pastor Lee, my Mother is having a hard time agreeing with the core leadership thing at church. For some reason, she does not want me to "commit" to church or be more involved with it. The reason I think why, is because the more time I'm at church, the less time I'm with her. She was just telling me that since I'm with my Father on every other sunday that.... It is probably not going to suncoast..... Ahhhhh! Pastor Lee, I will call you tomorrow! I don't feel like typing anymore!!!

Uhhhhh...

This one's a little weird.
So we got Dinah who all of a sudden get raped by Shechem. But then Shechem thinks that he can make things right by marrying Dinah.... Yeeeeah. Regardless this resulted in two very terrible things:
Terrible thing #1: He was circumcised
Terrible thing #2: His whole town was destroyed.
This just goes to prove sin never prospers. Even if you try to right your wrong it still is gonna bite you in the butt.

WOW, this is a crazy passage. i didn't expect to see this come from the Bible.

well this starts out by this one guy (sheckem) going and raping this one girl (jacob's daughter), WOW. so sheckem knowing that he did wrong went to ask his father if he could marry the girl. so sheckem's father went to jacob and asked if sheckem could marry her, and i guess sheckem's father tells jacob about sheckem raping his daughter because he finds out some how. so finding this out jacob was upset and her brothers were very upset, but jacob say that he can marry her if all the males in their town get circumsized, so jacob forgived sheckem. so levi and simeon knowing that all the males would either be knocked out our in very much pain from the circumcision went and killed EVERY male in the city and took all their animals and goods and took their families captive. when jacob finds out what happens he is very mad because now the allied armies of the town levi and simeon destroyed will come after him and kill him and his family.....WOW... so one sin caused all of this. we see now how powerful sin is. so first of all we should try not to sin, but that is impossible because we are not perfect, so we should try not to do a sin that if someone caught us it would either destroy our lives or mess it up pretty bad (like murder or rape). also one bad sin leads to another. if we do a bad sin the first time we are more inclined to do it again, so we should try not to sin.

wow i can't believe anyone would rape anyone. it is so wrong to have sex wih someone agaisnt ther will. it makes me mad how no one back then stood up for themselves and tried to fight it. and after Shekom did his wrong he went and asked his father if he could marry her. so after this Shecom had all his men and people in the land circumcised and then Dinahs brothers came and killed all of Skekoms men.

OH GEEZE, this is definitely one of those crazy weird pasages where people seem to go crazy and we can learn from it.
Well sheesh, if i was to rape a woman (if i was a guy, specifically that one,) i dont think id have had the inner audacity to go ask for her as a wife. Inside i would be so taunted by just the facct that id raped her, id probably move halfway across the world just to prevent thinking about it.
Thats a pretty good thing when you think of it because, if you are thinking that in depth and realize how convicted you be, you at least know that God is with you, whether you are making the 100% best choices or not.
The carelessness of Shechem showed the lack of connection to the Lord and the lack of guilt proved his ignorance towards God.
Its true how fast we are to point a finger and slow we are to realize how wrong WE really are as Christians sometimes.
The whole point of looking at a problem in that sense, is to realize its being solved unGodly and to do your part to glorify God in the way you yourself handle it.
WOAH i can totally use that!

& pastor lee about that whole meeting thing and such, i most definitely say yes.

SWEET HOMEPAGE FOR THE DEVOS!!!!!

Judgemental and hypocrites are HUGE in our world but also in us Christians. I can honestly say that I struggle with judging people. If they don't act like me or dress like me I tend to shun them and aren't an example like I should be. I have been or I guess I could say we all have been called to be an example and be Christ like toward others. And that isnt a easy task. But God says that He will never give us something to do that He we can't handle. Sooo if God thinks we can handle being Christ like, I can only imagine what else He knows we can do to show His love around the world. Butttt I also know that if I am not walking with Him daily, then I will not be able to be the best I can be because I am not getting the foundation that I need to be able to go out into the battle everyday!!!

niteeeeee

Wow thats kinda weird how they just decided to go and kill every male and keep every woman and child for captive. Wow it looks like sin can get you into a lot of trouble - just like adam and eve, and usally its being disobedient to God. The decisions that you make now will affect you in the future BIGTIME!
