James 3: 1-12

1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.
2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
3 Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.
4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.
5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:
8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.
10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.

This passage is one that applies to every person with a tongue. That would you and me! This passage lets us know how powerful and dangerous our tongue can be. The orange is facts about the tongue and the Blue is illustrations to help us understand how something so small can be so powerful. This passage explains that man has been able to tame every kind of animal. Think about it, we can teach our dog to do tricks, you go to sea world they teach a whale to do tricks, you go to the zoo and you see monkeys do tricks, horses, cows, sheep, tutrles, ligers :) all of them can be tamed. But we cannot tame our tongue. The truth is, the tongue will always diplay what is in our hearts. Therefore, if we want to control our tongue, we must control our heart!

The passage ends by explaining that there is no way that a water fountain can have bothe sweet water and salty water, the same tree cannot bring good apples and oranges. Therefore a persons mouth CANNOT bring forth praise and worship on Sunday and pour out trash throughout the rest of the week!

Lets guard our heart, so that we can guard our tongue!

This passage is basically saying that good words and bad words can not come out of the same mouth. We should only say things that will encourage other people. We as humans can not succeed at this, but with God's help anything is possible. All it will take is a prayer to God everyday asking Him to help us not to say anything to discourage people and not to say anything that will not honor Him. As you notice yourself slipping, which will happen, just keep your focus on God and ask Him to help you.

In my bible there is a side note saying: "At the time, gossipcan seem so harmless-a few words about a friend, information that nobody else knew. You felt big. Everybody paid attention to you and seemed to be impressed. And then, a few days pass. Your friend hears that you told her secrets. You gossiped. She's pretty upset and she's really hurt. You're ashamed, so you try to cover your tracks with lies. But it's too late. She already knows. What a mess.
James says that your tongue gets out of control and causes evil (see v.8). In other words, your mouth can get you into big trouble. Words are powerful, like 'deadly poison' (v.8). They can ruin somebody's day or somebody's life. They can also save somebody's life. They can hurt or they can heal. Read James 3:10-12. You'll see that blessing and cursing (good words and bad words) can't come out of the same person. So if you want to follow God, you can't gossip. Besides, who wants to be known as the best gossip in town? Warch your words. Use them well. Speak the truth instead of lies. Speak good things instead of bad things."

It gives other verses to refer to. The verses are: Proverbs 11:13 "A talebearer reveals secrets, but he who is of a faithful spirit conceals a matter.", Proverbs 16:28 "A perverse man sows strife, and a whisperer separates the best of friends.", Proverbs 20:19 "He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets; therefore do not associate with one who flatters with his lips.", Ephesians 4:29 "Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.", Ephesians 5:4 "Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks."

First of all I want to thank you Pastor Lee for "bugging" :) me into going to Jacksonville, I really had a good time and it was an encouragement for sure.

I think these passages say that we may be tempted to think that what we say has very little importance, but the truth is that the way we use our words will impact our lives and the lives of others more than anything else that we do! It is importcant that we begin to get control of what we say and use it properly. I definitly struggle with this at times. Controlling our tongues is a challenge in itself. It's difficult to always say the right things. Yet the things we say direct our lives, and often the lives of others. The Bible has a lot to say about the negative things our tongues can cause. It can control our lives like James is telling us that something small can steer something large. My challenge?...when my heart is right before God, my tongue will more consistently speak those things that encourage, build up, and heal. And when I do this, I will feel better about myself and I will make a real difference in the lives of others.

well this passage is awesome and very true
like jessica said what comes out of our mouths effects our lives and others lives
and i dont know about u but i def dont wanna be responsable for people going to hell just because of a simple thing like not saying the right things and nopt honoring God with what i say because u might not notice it but what u say effects how you act and that is what others are looking at because if your not ashamed of your beliefs then most people know that you are a christian and if your not acting any defferent than them then that could be keeping them from getting to know God. . . .

wow i just read kaceys first paragraph and it is exactly true all it takes is a simple prayer to make a huge differance

and actually i have a ton to say but i just dont know how to say it and if i type it it will make absolutely no sence lol so im done =]
